Day 2 in Boston

On Monday we did something we have been wanting to do ever since we saw the Gilmore Girls episode 'Roadtrip to Harvard.' Yes, that's right, we spent the day at Harvard!

The main gate at Harvard. Students are superstitious that you should only walk through these gates twice in your time at Harvard, once on your first day, and once when you graduate. If you walk through the gates more than twice, you will be stuck at Harvard forever (I likened this to Van Wilder but with less partying).

First we did a free historical tour of the college which is done by a student. Then we walked around and took photos of a bunch of buildings and marvelled at how pretty it all is.

The statue of Harvard founder John Harvard, the 3rd most photographed statue in the US behind the Lincoln Memorial and the Statue of Liberty. Also known as the 'statue of three lies' (which is funny as Harvard's motto is 'Veritas' meaning 'Truth') because John Harvard wasn't the founder of Harvard, the founding date on the statue is wrong and they have actually no idea what John Harvard looks like as all known portraits of him were destroyed in a fire!

One of the massive libraries at Harvard. This goes 6 stories underground and about 200m back. Think of all the books!

Next we walked down to the river where they row 'crew'. This was really pretty because even though it was only about 4 degrees, the sun was out and was sparkling across the water.

The Harvard Co-op (known as the 'coop' as in chicken here in the US) was our next stop and we had a very fun time going through, and buying a large amount of the merchandise. The rest of the afternoon we spent wandering around Harvard Square, looking at the shops, grabbing a late lunch, and shivering in the cold.

  1. Such beautiful photos! Haha, I can so imagine you having a little Harvard thing in your room full of merchandise like Rory did for ages.
