First Day in LA

Forty-eight hours after leaving Perth, we finally arrived in a humid LA. We decided, rather than go out that first night, we would try and get a bit of a rest since as we had only had about 5 hours of broken sleep. This didn't work out so well as, aside from the hostel being noisy, although this I can deal with, there is a nightclub across the street which is obviously very loud until the early hours, so, once again, broken sleep.

So after waking up at the very early hour of 6am by rubbish trucks right outside our window, we decided to get an early start (9am) to the day and set off in search off food and fun. Apparently nothing even opens on Hollywood Boulevard (we are staying one street away) until after 10 and even then, it's rather limited until later in the day. So we walked the rather empty street and visited the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

This didn't really take too long as all the shops were closed so we made our way down Vine St and hit Sunset Boulevard. Sunset was probably the biggest let down of LA so far. We have been told though that maybe we did the wrong end so we will attempt to find the right end tomorrow (it's really long). We also had a lot of trouble finding somewhere that would just sell us a sim card as everywhere seems to only let you buy it with the phone (which we already have). We are going to try somewhere else tomorrow so fingers crossed (sorry to everyone who wants to text. For the time being you can still contact me on my normal number).

After these disapp0ointments we decided to head back to our hostel (having eventually found a supermarket, so not easy!) and get some rest as, due to our lack of sleep the previous night, we were still rather jet lagged. We slept until 4pm and then went to try shopping on Hollywood Blvd again. This time there were heaps of people around and the sops were open. Success!

Our current impression of LA is that it is a tired, run down city that does not live up to it's hype. Hopefully this impression will change tomorrow.

Much love to all and I'm sorry if I don't reply to your comments individually, but know that they are appreciated and being read.

  1. FIRST!

I hope you have more fun tomorrow. I also hope you jumped on the stars of actors you didn't like. :P

  2. Glad you arrived safely! I was told LA was crap before I went, so I ended up thinking it was better than I was expecting. But I saw Cobra Starship at the Troubadour and other such things, so maybe that helped. If you have time, you should go to Amoeba Music on Sunset Boulevard (number 6400): http://www.amoeba.com/ It's awesome, I could've spent all day there. Liam Finn played a short set there one night when I was there, so they might have someone cool doing in in-store while you're there. Just an idea :)

    Love you! xoxo

  3. HA! Love Lewis's comment! And agree with Linda as I heard from Tim I think, about Amoeba Music - you need to go there. Also Pete thinks you were at the wrong end of the strip! Mark Minciullo was here tonight and totally agrees with your viewpoint on LA but thinks you will love San Franciso.

  4. Don't try to make LA live up to anything - it's mostly a city of facades so you kind of have to take it at face value or be disappointed. Although the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena are truly worth the hype - so lovely. Also it is hilarious to get to Venice Beach on the weekend and watch the muscle men working out. :)
